GOALS
The International Academy of
Environmental Sciences (IAES)
was founded by a group of scientists and experts coming from diverse
disciplines (medicine, biology, architecture, law, etc.) and parts of
the world whose goal is to enhance the valorisation and harmonious evolution
of peoples and the environment.
Prof. Adolfo Perez Esquivel, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, is President
of the Academy; Prof. Antonino Abrami, a magistrate as well as professor
of the EU Jean Monnet Project on the environment and author of: “Storia,
scienza e diritto comunitario dell’ambiente” (Ed. Cedam – 2001)
is the Acting-President.
The IAES office is currently based in Venice but new locations are soon
expected to open in Rome and Brussels.
The goals the Academy pursues include: to work for the establishment
of an International Environmental Criminal Court to protect ecosystems
from intentional disasters and/or transboundary damages, and to promote
environmental policies aimed at protecting and conserving nature’s
resources from the risks and abuse inflicted by individuals. The Academy
will therefore work to:
- organize conferences and forums, even and especially within the EU,
on emerging environmental issues, starting with the safeguarding of marine
ecosystems,
- develop preventive environmental policies to protect the environment
from the risks inflicted by individuals,
- create an observatory to safeguard the environment to assure that environmental
norms be respected,
- create a network of experts and opportunities to meet and exchange
the latest state-of-the-art methods, in order to preserve and protect
the environment,
- promote initiatives in the field of education and training that focus
on environmental problems which integrate and apply existing environmental
and human rights legislation,
- stimulate and enhance scientific research in the environmental sector.
The Academy launched its work activities in Venice, in 2003, by organizing
a seminar to train professionals working in the Superintendencies of
the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia Regions (held by Professor Antonino
Abrami and Riccardo Fuzio).
The Academy also promotes the following initiatives:
- international meetings, with acclaimed authorities in different scientific
fields and disciplines, to draw conclusions on the priorities to follow
in protecting and studying ecosystems,
-the creation of an observatory to safeguard the environment and survey
that existing norms be respected,
- to monitor the conduct of States, Regions and Bodies to ensure that
all
the environmental jurisprudence set down by the Court of Justice is respected,
- to work (seminars, publications, CDs, etc.) to facilitate the review
and update of environmental legislation in different countries, with
particular attention to transboundary problems,
- to create an ample network of researchers and specialists to compare
different environmental realities,
- to promote initiatives – at a local, regional, national and international
level to reinforce the protection of environmental resources,
- to promote initiatives aimed at enhancing the integration of new States
into the EU, with particular reference to respecting EU Environmental
legislation;
- all initiatives are finalized towards the establishment of an International
Environmental Criminal Court,
- to create and diffuse publications on science, technology, and environmental
development as well as juridic-scientific forms of Environmental protection.
